Lizzy looked aghast; in fact, everyone looked aghast. Cath was particularly wide-eyed. âBut why did that werewolf kill the vampire?â
âI donât know.â
âWas she a friend of Valerieâs? Was she tracking this Philip guy?â
I shrugged. âI donât know.â
Cath opened her mouth to ask another question. I held up my hands. âShe didnât shift back. Monroe told her to and she didnât. To be honest, it seemed like she couldnât.â
Lizzyâs horror grew. âShe was trapped in that form?â She clasped her throat. As a type of shapeshifter herself â and very new to it â it was her greatest fear that sheâd transform into her furry, horned, bunyip shape and wouldnât be able to change back to her human form again.
âI donât know that either,â I admitted. âShe did everything else Monroe told her to do. When he commanded that she shift, she looked like she was trying.â In truth, sheâd looked like she was in terrible pain but I wasnât going to tell Lizzy that.
âThatâs awful.â
Julie snorted. âShe had just ripped a vampire apart. I donât think she needs much sympathy.â
âA vampire who deserved it! He murdered Valerie for no good reason,â Lizzie protested.
âProbably,â I interjected. âHe probably murdered Valerie.â
âAn eye for an eye,â Lizzy declared.
Julie crossed her arms. âInnocent until proven guilty,â she shot back.
I passed a hand over my forehead. Lizzy and Julie usually got on alright. The fact that they were arguing about what had happened did not bode well. I reached across, grabbed the bottle of gin and started glugging it neat. The pair of them slowly swivelled towards me then exchanged glances.
âMaybe you should go lie down, Charley,â Lizzy suggested.
Julie nodded. âI think thatâs a good idea.â
At least we finally agreed on something. I yawned. Then I thought of all the people outside who wanted to talk to me; I had other responsibilities beyond killer vampires, insane werewolves and glorious sleep to deal with.
âIn a while,â I said. âGive me a rundown of whatâs been happening for the last couple of days while Iâve been away first.â I wanted to see what I could delegate and what I really had to deal with myself. I managed a tired smile and pretended I didnât see the worry in my friendsâ eyes. âNo rest for the wicked.â
